The Chicago-Hammond Airport became the Lansing Municipal Airport (KIGQ) after the Village of Lansing acquired it in 1976. The acquisition allowed the airport to become a public facility, and thereby eligible for federal funding. Historic Ford Hangar Marker photo, links to larger photo

The history of the Lansing airport dates back to the 1920's when such notables as Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh, and Wiley Post used the airport in efforts to promote aviation in the United States. This postcard depicts the hangar tenants in the mid 1940's.
Today, Lansing Municipal Airport remains the site of the Historic Ford hangar and is home to a striking Veterans Memorial with a military-aviation theme.

After the acquisition Lansing proceeded to implement a successful expansion program to further develop the airport. The purpose of the effort was to promote Lansing Municipal into a facility equal to the other Cook County reliever airports. This has already been achieved, and yet a new wave of development is forthcoming.

Expressways are minutes away from Lansing Municipal Airport, but they don't all end in downtown Chicago! Points in northwest Indiana and southern Michigan are easily accessible by airplane or auto, as well as all social and cultural attractions south of Chicago.

Lansing and the other 59 south and southwest suburbs in "Chicago Southland" form a thriving area of business and industry. They offer accommodations, restaurants and entertainment that rival and provide alternatives for staying in downtown Chicago.
